Thirty years ago I was sworn in as a young, newly elected city council member. The next 13 years serving on City Council were some of the most rewarding of my life because I realized that a well-functioning local government can truly make a difference in our lives and in the future of our community.
Let me give you just one example.
In the early 1980s walking with my family to City Park from our home on West Orchard Place for the 4th of July fireworks, I noticed that families, including ours, were forced to walk in the west-bound traffic lanes of Mulberry due to a lack of sidewalks. It was a dangerous situation for all of us. As a councilmember, I worked hard to solve this problem, getting sidewalks installed all along City Park. Realizing that problems like this occur across our city, I then led an effort to get a city-wide sidewalk program to ensure safe pedestrian flow in all of our neighborhoods.
I’m now older, grayer, and maybe a bit wiser, and I’ve decided to once again run for city council in District 6. I believe that my extensive experience, pragmatic problem solving, and proven dedication to the community will be valuable during these challenging times.
If elected, I will work hard for you - just like I did many years ago. I would greatly appreciate your support and your vote.
Sincerely,
Gerry
